Your beacon of optimism & knowledge amidst hereditary cancer risks.

Hosted by Sara Kavanaugh, Lynch Syndrome & CHEK2 Previvor

Opening:

Welcome to the Positive Gene Podcast. I'm your host, Sara Kavanaugh. But before we dive in, I want to clarify something very important: I'm not a medical professional. Everything shared here is based on my personal experience and journey with hereditary cancer syndromes. Always consult with your healthcare providers about your personal health concerns.

A Personal Perspective, Not Professional Advice:

If you're tuning in, chances are you or someone you know has been affected or is curious about hereditary cancer genetic mutations. Here, we talk about the challenges, the triumphs, the tears, and the hope. I want you to walk away from each episode feeling more empowered and a little less alone on this journey.

My Backstory:

My journey began in 2022, after a breast screening brought to light the dense nature of my breasts. This led to genetic testing, revealing my predispositions: Lynch Syndrome (mutation in the MSH6 gene - which puts me at increased risk for multiple types of cancers but most commonly, colorectal and uterine) and CHEK2 which increases my risk for breast cancer, as well as a slight increased risk for colorectal cancer. Both my parents have passed on, making this discovery both poignant and a little overwhelming. This diagnosis has taken me through surgeries, rigorous screenings which will continue for the rest of my life, and even an unexpected thyroid scare. Thankfully, it was benign. Through all these, my research-oriented heart dove deep into understanding my conditions, bolstering my resilience with knowledge and faith.

Purpose of Podcast:

I strongly believe that we are blessed by God to be a blessing to others. This podcast is my way of reaching out. My faith has been my rock – from battling anxiety during screenings to awaiting results with bated breath. I want to pass on the hope and courage I've derived from my experiences as a previvor. You're not defined by your diagnosis. With the right tools, faith, and knowledge, you can feel empowered over your health and enjoy life to its fullest.

National Hereditary Cancer Week & Previvor Day:Launching this podcast during National Hereditary Cancer Week is no coincidence. From September 24th to September 30th, we shine a spotlight on the immense impact hereditary cancer has on families. And on the 27th – a date that’s doubly significant for me, being my late mother's birthday – we celebrate National Previvor Day. FORCE, an organization championing this cause, highlights the fact that 90% of those with cancer-predisposing genetic mutations are unaware of their risk. Knowledge, indeed, is power. Let’s spread that power, that knowledge.

Upcoming Episodes:

"In the coming episodes, we'll explore a blend of the technical and the personal. Expect insights on hereditary cancers, an in-depth patient's perspective on genetic testing, navigating family talks, and coping with the emotional whirlwind. Whether you're a patient, a loved one, or a healthcare provider, there's something here for you."

Closing:

Thank you for tuning in to our inaugural episode. I truly believe that together, we can redefine our journey with hereditary cancers – from one of fear to one of hope and empowerment. If this resonated with you, please subscribe, follow, and leave a comment. Remember, this podcast is for you. Stay blessed, and always keep that positive gene spirit alive!
